FREISCHWIMMER examines collective memory and socio-political transformation processes using the example of an East German swimming pool. The work combines film footage of the location, numerous interview sequences, archive material, and images from private photo albums into a multi-channel video installation that reflects on historical construction processes and social changes in the former GDR in the 1960s and after the political transition in 1989. The montage of diverse image sources reveals continuities, breaks, and gaps in collective memory. The work creates a reflexive space in which viewers can sensually experience the transformations of social participation, architectural history, and local politics.
