Each photo shows a flowering rose, named after a visual artist. There are fourteen varieties named after: Albrecht Dürer, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Camille Pissarro, Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Henri Matisse, Maurice Utrillo, Paul Gauguin, Paul Cezanne, Picasso, Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sissley und Marc Chagall.
In 1972 the artist Joseph Beuys established the office Organisation für direkte Demokratie durch Volksabstimmung for Documenta 5. Visitors could find the artist there, sitting at a desk with a red rose in a measuring cylinder. Titled (Roses) is a quotation of Beuys‘ work and an attempt to examin it.
